David Catlin’s acclaimed adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a visceral, play-within-a-play that intertwines the classic horror narrative with the true story of how the novel was born.
Catlin’s script cleverly merges two timelines. The frame story takes place during the infamous summer of 1816 in a Swiss villa on Lake Geneva, where Mary Godwin (later Shelley), Percy Bysshe Shelley, Claire Clairmont, Lord Byron, and Dr. John Polidori challenge one another to write a ghost story. As Mary begins to spin her terrifying tale, the villa’s quintet transforms into the characters from the novel, acting out the tragic saga of Victor Frankenstein and his creation.
